Bold Visions, Bigger Gifts: Strategies for Major Donor Upgrades
Scaling Major Gifts. Strategies, action steps, and ideas for scaling major gifts by Tammy Zonker, Major Gift Expert & Keynote Speaker.
After nearly three decades in the world of major gifts, I’ve learned that the difference between a good fundraising year and a transformative one often comes down to our ability to inspire donors to think—and give—bigger. In this edition of Scaling Major Gifts, I want to share some hard-earned insights on upgrading major donors, drawing from both my own journey and the many talented professionals I’ve had the privilege to work alongside.
Why Major Donor Upgrades Matter
In my experience, the most successful organizations are those that continually challenge themselves—and their donors—to dream bigger. Whether you’re a major gift officer, development director, executive director, or board member, your ability to cultivate and upgrade major donors is essential to your mission’s growth and sustainability.
Statistics consistently show that a small percentage of donors contribute the majority of philanthropic dollars. According to Giving USA, gifts of $1 million or more accounted for over 15% of all giving in recent years. That means every donor upgrade has the potential to move the needle in a significant way.
Common Challenges in Upgrading Major Donors
Over the years, I’ve encountered a handful of recurring challenges when it comes to major donor upgrades:
Fear of asking for too much: Many fundraisers worry about “scaring off” donors with bold asks.
Lack of a compelling vision: Donors rarely upgrade their giving for incremental needs; they want to be part of something transformative.
Insufficient donor data: Without a clear understanding of a donor’s capacity and interests, it’s easy to miss upgrade opportunities.
Inconsistent stewardship: If donors don’t feel valued and engaged, they’re unlikely to increase their support.
Strategies That Drive Bigger Gifts
Here are some practical strategies I’ve found effective in overcoming these challenges:
1. Lead with Vision
I’ve found that donors respond to bold, inspiring visions—not just needs. When I worked with an organization looking to double its impact, we didn’t just ask for more money; we painted a vivid picture of what that growth would achieve. We invited donors to be architects of that future, not just funders.
2. Personalize the Approach
One approach I’ve seen work well is to tailor upgrade strategies to each donor’s motivations and capacity. This means doing your homework: leveraging wealth screening tools, reviewing past giving, and listening deeply in conversations.
3. Use Data to Inform Asks
In my experience, data-driven insights are invaluable. Tools like DonorSearch and WealthEngine can help you identify donors with untapped potential and craft more ambitious, yet realistic, asks.
4. Steward with Purpose
Upgrades rarely happen in a vacuum. I’ve seen the best results when stewardship is intentional and ongoing—through personalized updates, impact stories, and meaningful recognition.
Case Study: Transforming a Good Donor into a Great One
A few years ago, I worked with a mid-sized nonprofit that had a loyal donor giving $10,000 annually for several years. Rather than simply thanking her each year, we invited her to a behind-the-scenes tour, introduced her to beneficiaries, and shared our boldest plans for the future. Armed with insights from her giving history and a recent wealth screening, we crafted a proposal for a $100,000 leadership gift to launch a new program. She said yes—because she felt seen, inspired, and integral to our vision.
Actionable Takeaways
Here are steps you can implement right away:
Audit your top donors: Identify those with upgrade potential using your CRM and screening tools.
Craft a bold case for support: Articulate a vision that demands bigger investment.
Personalize your outreach: Align your ask with the donor’s values and interests.
Invest in stewardship: Develop a year-round plan to keep donors engaged and inspired.
Boldness Pays Off
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that boldness pays off. Donors want to be part of something extraordinary, and it’s our job to invite them into that story. Don’t be afraid to ask for more when you have a vision that warrants it. Your confidence—and your cause—are contagious.
I’d love to hear your experiences: What strategies have worked for you in upgrading major donors? What challenges are you facing?
Let’s keep dreaming—and achieving—bigger together.
